Sometimes, when you least expect it, a very ordinary scene screams out at you “paint me”. That was certainly the case when my cat Benny tried to squeeze his very large frame onto a very narrow window sill.
I grabbed my camera and started snapping away before he decided to move. Luckily he was very co-operative that day, looking straight into the camera while I took the shot.
This painting was quite different from anything I had done at the time, mostly because the lack of colour. After the painting was finished, I wasn’t really sure if it was any good so I put the cheapest frame I could find on it and put it on our wall, never intending to show it.
Some time later, I was entering the Bayswater Art Prize and needed a third painting to fill the entry form, so I put “Benny” on the list. To my great surprise it won the award for Best Oil/Acrylic at the show, my first art prize. Funny thing was, I had only put $250 on it as I didn’t really think it had a chance. Needless to say it sold straight away.
This just goes to show that you should never be afraid to back yourself. You have nothing to lose and you never know what might happen.
