After doing a couple of these types of surf paintings, I wanted to create something with a more balanced composition and a few more curves. To put it in surfing terms, a beach break rather than a point break.
I got the idea for this painting from watching the surf at Duranbah Beach. The waves at this beach always seem to break all over the place and it’s often quite “lumpy”.
The other thing that struck me when I was watching the surf is that there seeems to be almost an equal number of bodyboarders and stand-up surfers at D’bah but very few other watercraft. Knowing how crowded the surf can get and that there is always bit of rivalry between these two types of surfers, I wanted to depict the competition they face for the waves – hence the title, Board Wars.
