Buyer Gifts From Your Real Estate Agent Can Make the Right Impression, or the Wrong One.

I didn’t realize that buyer gifts were such a big thing until one of my US customers mentioned that she is a realtor and the purchase was to be a closing gift.house number, mailbox number, mosaic mailbox, mosaic tile, ceramic tile, address number, front door sign, housewarming, beach decor, coastal style

What a great idea, I thought.  Impress your buyers with by going the extra mile with a meaningful gift. They are sure to remember you when they are thinking of selling in the future.  Better still, impress their admiring friends and relatives who may also be thinking of selling their home.

Do Australian Real Estate Agents Care About Buyer Gifts?

This made me wonder if Australian real estate agents put as much thought into buyer gifts as their American counterparts do.   If not, why not?  As a many-times buyer, I don’t remember ever receiving a gift from the real estate agent, however I did once receive a bottle of champagne from a vendor.

Consequently, I got a bit curious about this buyer gift idea and did some google research.

Apparently, US realtors place great value on trying to make a lasting impression with their clients by finding a unique and thoughtful gift.  The bottom of the barrel, it seems when it comes to buyer gifts, are flowers, chocolates and champagne or wine.  Perhaps these are the easiest gifts as you may not know that much about the people you are buying for. However, your clients may have allergies, be dieting, non-drinkers or worse.  Imagine buying a bottle of liquor for someone who is a recovering alcoholic.

Other no-no’s include gift cards and knife sets.  Receiving knives as a gift can be considered an insult in some cultures and a gift card just seems lazy.  The worst buyer gifts of all have to be marketing material with your own cheesy face on it.  This reeks of self-promotion.

Alternatively, a snowblower, park bench, pool table, football helmet signed by Tom Brady and original artworks were among some of the more impressive gifts I saw.  Handmade and personalized items appeared to be the most memorable and valued gifts according to buyers.

So what do you buy for your clients that will create a lasting (positive) memory of your thoughtfulness but, importantly, won’t eat too much into your hard-earned commission?
