In Perth, the ultimate weekend getaway, for those who don’t want to drive, is Rottnest Island. On any sunny day the tranquil bays all around the Island are filled with boats of all shapes and sizes.
I always think of it as a caravan park on the water. Families are camped there for several days at a time, often getting together with others and enjoying barbecues, swimming, fishing and snorkelling. It sometimes reminds me of that old Kevin Costner movie, Water World, where nobody ever needs to set foot on land. Those holidays were some of the best we ever had when our girls were growing up.
Many of the boats at Rotto have so much character that while relaxing on our boat, I used to snap photos of them to paint back at home. Rottnest Blue was the first one of these. It was painted in early in 1999 and proved to be a winner, taking out the popular choice award at the Northam Art Prize that year.
